Kedarnath is a town in the state of Uttarakhand that got popular because of the Kedarnath Yatra being carried out each year to visit the temple of Lord Shiva. The literal meaning of the word Kedarnath is ‘lord of the field.’ Kedarnath has been a pilgrimage centre since ancient times.
As per our study on the Kedarnath Yatra overview, one of the earliest references of Kedarnath temple was found in Skanda Puran(7th -8th Century), which referred to Kedarnath as a place where Lord Shiva released the holy water of Ganga from his matted hair, resulting in the formation of Ganga.
After completing the Kedarnath Yatra, you reach the Kedarnath temple located in the Garhwal Himalayan region near the Mandakini river. Because of extreme weather conditions, this temple is open only for a limited period for pilgrimages.
